Sample It Saturday – Giant Eagle Pasta

Welcome to Sample it Saturday! Each Saturday there will be a review of a Giant Eagle brand product. Giant Eagle has a “Brand Quality Guarantee” which simply states:

As with any purchase from the family of Giant Eagle® brands, if you aren’t 100% satisfied with your purchase, we’ll give you double your money back.” (link)

*I was in no way compensated to do these reviews, and I purchased the product on my own dime. I promise to always provide honest feedback on every product.

GE DIGITAL CAMERAThis week we are trying Giant Eagle Pasta Cavatappi a 14 oz box is $1.25 (8.5 cents/oz) but sometimes go on sale for $1. SanGiorgio is $1.39 for 1 lb (8.6 cents/oz) and Barilla is the same price. The only other brand is the organic Nature’s Basket at $2.19 for 12 oz (18.2 cents/oz). Watch the ounces on these, sometimes different pasta is different sizes, though the boxes look the same.

I have to admit that I am not sure how to pronounce this curly pasta’s name. I don’t think I have a bit of Italian in my heritage! I thought this pasta was very good! We made it with sauce & chicken and my kids thought it was very cool curly pasta. Sometimes we can get good deals on pasta, but if I need some and it is cheaper, I would buy it again.

Sample It Saturday – Giant Eagle Classic Potato Chips

GE DIGITAL CAMERAThis week we are trying Giant Eagle Classic Potato Chips. They come in a 10 oz bag for $3.29 ($.33/oz) and sometimes go on sale for $2. Lays are $4.29 for 10 oz ($.43/oz), Shears are $3.79 for 8.5 oz ($.45/oz), and Gold N Krisp is $2.69 for 7 oz ($.38/oz).

These were good! We just ate them with dip and everyone was pleased. I very rarely get plain chips (my husband calls them “grease-flavored”) but we were having company and it sounded like a good idea. There are so many items that we get coupons for, and it makes the name-brand cheaper than generic – but chips is not one of them! This bag is a good deal, and I would definitely buy them again! Can’t wait to try the BBQ!

Sample It Saturday – Giant Eagle Storage Bags

GE DIGITAL CAMERAThis week we are trying Giant Eagle Storage Bags. I bought a 40 count box for $3.49 (8.7 cents each). There is also a 20 count box for $2.49 (12 cents each) and a big box of 120 for $9.99 (8 cents each). Ziploc had 40 count boxes for $5.29 (13 cents ea), a 20 count box for $3.29 (16 cents ea) and a 15 count box for $2.89 (19 cents ea). Hefty had a 30 count box for $3.99 (13 each).

Overall I am very impressed with these bags. The bag itself is sturdy, and I don’t worry about it leaking. The seal is a little hard to get sealed, but I have grown used to the zip top kind, they are more like the ones I remember growing up. I don’t like the pop-out bottom that some of the Ziploc or Hefty brand bags have, and I was pleased to see these bags do not have that feature (just my personal preference).

If they are cheaper than Ziploc or Hefty, I would buy these again!

Sample It Saturday – Giant Eagle Training Pants

GE DIGITAL CAMERA

This week we are trying Giant Eagle Girl’s Training Pants. A Jumbo is $7.99, Huggies and Pampers are both $9.99. All three packs contain 26 training pants each.

I first have to admit that I have always been a bit of a diaper snob. We used Pampers mostly for both my kids, Huggies occasionally, and very rarely generic brands. I was always couponing so we got good deals, often cheaper than generics so it wasn’t a big deal.

I took a picture of the Giant Eagle one (left) and the Pampers Easy Up (right). The Giant Eagle brand had a cheap feel to it, not like underwear at all. But the sides stay together well (my issue with Huggies Pull Ups, they come apart to easy). My daughter just uses them at night, so they are on for 8-10 hours. And well, it wasn’t apparent at first, but they smell. And I know that doesn’t seem like a big suprise, but with Pampers my daughters skin or the soiled pull up don’t smell. These STINK! But, she hasn’t had any leaks or rash. If your kids get excited about the pattern (Clifford) on the pant, these are very faded, not near as bright as the Pampers Easy Ups.

GE DIGITAL CAMERAPampers and Huggies are often running promotions with bonus FuelPerks! and Catalinas, and there are almost always coupons from the paper or internet. And if you have babies, these coupons often find a way into your mailbox. Bottom line- I took these back and won’t be buying them again.

This week we are trying Giant Eagle Honey Grahams. They are $2.19 for a 14.4 oz box ($.15/oz). I bought Honey, there is also Cinnamon available.  There were three other brands- Keebler $3.39/14 oz ($.24/oz), Honey Maid $4.09/14.4 oz ($.24/oz) and Nabisco Grahams $4.09/14.4 oz ($.28 oz).

These were good. I couldn’t really tell they were not name brand. I also crunched some up to use as a crust, and that worked well to! I would buy them again. Very good!

Sample It Saturday – Giant Eagle Cinnamon Rolls

This week we are trying Giant Eagle Cinnamon Rolls. They are 3/$5 for 12.4 oz. Pillsbury has two varieties Cinnabon is $2.50 and Flaky is also $2.50.

The cinnamon rolls were ok. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. If you prefer cream cheese icing, then these are not for you. They just had plain icing in them.  They had typical directions, and I made them in a 9″ glass pie dish. We ended up letting my kids eat them and probably won’t buy them again.
